I’ve said many times that our first year with the girls was a total blur. They were in the NICU for a month, then the first few months home were a total haze. Sleep deprivation, breastfeeding (and associated difficulties), illness….plus the fact that I was wrapping up my doctoral dissertation, Chris’ work schedule was rigorous, and we were just SOOOO over our heads. It doesn’t help that our closest family lives 900 miles away. It was rough.

It didn’t feel like we really celebrated a holiday until St. Patrick’s Day rolled around…in mid March….when the girls were 9 months old. Some holidays we skipped all together (their first 4th of July), some holidays we only “celebrated” because we were invited to other people’s homes (their first Thanksgiving). Many other holidays we did totally half-heartedly. Going through the motions, but not really putting in any effort (because we had no energy to spare!!!) That definitely applies to last years’ Halloween.

Note that NONE of these photos (not even the costume photos) were taken on actual Halloween day (the last picture of the 2 lambs was actually taken in JANUARY, though most pics were taken in October/November). We just went through the motions. I knew we would want to capture their first Halloween so we got costumes, visited the “pumpkin patch” (no where NEAR as cool as the Austin one!!!) and carved a pumpkin. But we didn’t feel any Halloween “spirit”, if that makes sense.

This year, things were 100% different!

Things are SO MUCH EASIER when you get sleep! And the girls have gotten to be so much more fun as they’ve gotten older. Although at Halloween 2012 they were technically 4 months old, their 2 month premature status made them seem more like 2 month olds in terms of schedule and abilities. Going back to the newborn stage – while fun at the time – is something I really never care to do again….especially with TWO babies!

I guess all this is to say that this year, although technically the girls’ 2nd Halloween, in a lot of ways felt like their first “real” Halloween. And it was perfect! The weekend before, we took the girls to a big Trunk or Treat at the local YMCA. Then on actual Halloween night we had some friends over, put the kiddos in their Halloween duds, and spent the night handing out candy. The girls LOVED seeing all the big kids come to our door, and lots of the trick-or-treaters loved seeing our little ladybugs too! One kid (probably 2-ish) even came inside! lol. He thought we were having a little baby party and just ran right in! The adults ate chili, drank apple cider, and relaxed while the kids ran around playing. It was the perfect “1st” Halloween!

in the blink of an eye!

Not that I want time to speed up or anything, but I can’t wait to see what the next year holds! Here’s to hoping for even more great times with our sweet, happy girls!
